This unit dealt with course books and lesson materials, which can be divided into two categories: authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials are things that a native speaker would use everyday, such as tv, newspapers, radio, etc. and are not graded for skill level. Created materials are designed by the teacher and can be graded to meet the specific needs of a particular skill level and/or nationality. Course books have many advantages, such as being a tried and tested material, providing a syllabus to follow, and provides a good mix of exercises to develop various skills. These books, however, can often contain material that lack inspiration for students as well as containing material that is developed for a broader audience and may not meet the needs of all class members. in my experience learning other languages, I have found that exclusive use of a course book does not engage students as much as when a teacher supplements the book with other materials, whether they are authentic or created materials.
