This unit discusses the following topics: modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. Examples of modals include: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, need not, and ought to. These verbs are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. Modals can be used to express obligation, possibility, permission, prohibition, ability, or advice. Furthermore, phrasal verbs have three types: type 1 - intransitive, is not followed by a direct object; type 2 -
transitive separable, has an object pronoun that can come between the verb and the particle; and type 3 -transitive inseparable, has the object phrase or object pronoun that both come after the particle. Finally, a sentence containing a verb in the passive voice shows that the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. Passive voice is used when the performer of the action is unknown; when the performer of the action is not important; and when there isn't a need to emphasize the performer of the action.
