The two productive skills are speaking and writing. I am learning that fluency really is just as important as accuracy.
Accuracy activities usually take place in the study phase of a lesson. During this time, teachers make sure that the students are speaking and writing properly. But fluency activities take place during the activate stage. Here, the main goal is for the students to learn to use the language freely and creatively. A teacher needs to be careful not to over-correct during this stage, because accuracy is not the highest objective here.
What I found most interesting about this unit is how many simple games can be used to teach students language. The benefit of these games, for both the engage and activate stage, is that the students will feel relaxed and motivated to participate. Hang man would be a really good activity for spelling, and games like pictionary would be great to encourage a student to speak creatively and freely. I am interested to see how I can incorporate this into my lesson plans while teaching.
