In Unit 13, the emphasis is on the importance of phonetic English (although it is largely ignored in teaching). For the first portion of this unit, intonation is focused on as this is a unique aspect of spoken English that cannot be understood in written English. A brief explanation of intonations and their impact on the message of a sentence is given. Followed by this, explanations for stress on certain words and the impact that has on the meaning of a sentence is given. Following this, unit 13 attempts to explain the phonetic alphabet and the complexity of many English words being spelled one way but pronounced another, which can be very confusing for English language learners. The reasons for different types and kinds of pronunciation are elaborated on. Finally, techniques and suggestions for methods to teach pronunciation and phonology in class are given. This unit largely tackles the importance of learning language to be able to speak more like a native rather than learning all the technical and grammatical areas of English.
