This unit focuses on productive skills: speaking and writing. While distinct aspects of learning English, they do have some things in common. First, spoken English was given an overview. Accuracy and fluency are two different focuses in the classroom. During particular parts of a lesson, accuracy will be the focus (study phase) while fluency is the focus at a different time (activate phase). As these can be the focus as different times, different activities are given as examples for either accuracy or fluency. It was revealed that students (as expected) can be nervous or intimidated to speak English for a variety of reasons, but some techniques to overcome those challenges are given. Instructions are given prior to, during, and following an activity with speaking. Writing skills are also touched upon, including handwriting, spelling, and layout/punctuation. Each different section on writing has small recommendations for how to approach in class with students. Following this, there is an example of a straight arrow ESA class period.
