This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit gave a basic introduction to the importance of teaching the receptive skills of reading and listening. The idea of teaching reading can be misconstrued at face value. A teacher might focus on the basic structures of sentences and paragraphs, and teach the students how to use phonics to sound out words that they might not know. This unit dove deeper by stating that in order to effectively teach reading; a teacher also need to focus on not only teaching how to recognize and understand the words, but how to grasp the overall meaning from preexisting knowledge. In order to do this one must become familiar with and how to convey the specialist skills that are necessary. The listening aspect, as noted in the text, will be more difficult for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The skill set needed to teach effective listening will come with experience. The teacher will have to try then adapt their speech patterns, words used, and overall presentation of the topic in order to overcome a potential language barrier.
