This unit emphasizes the difference between accuracy and fluency based learning, and productive skills. Productive skills are writing and speaking, they are the active practice of a language. This is taught through accuracy and fluency activities. Fluency activities are important to build a students comfort and confidence utilizing the language and are primarily focused on during the activate phase, through games, role play and other speaking exercises. Accuracy based learning where grammar and pronunciation are emphasized take the form of writing and drilling in the study and engage phases respectively.
Writing in the study phase is an example of a productive skill, as is speech in the activate phase. Both of these skills must be exercised to enable language uptake and learning by the students. Writing is also a valuable tool to encourage higher understanding of a language once a certain proficiency level has been met. Writing and creativity serve to broaden the abilities of the speaker through practice and understanding.
