I learned about the difficulties for foreigners learning pronunciation of English due to many sounds coming from one spelling, and the same sound having many spellings. Pronunciation is an area where teachers are often reluctant to teach, often because they are quite unsure of the topic themselves.
The international phonetic alphabet gets rid of all archaic spelling and gives one symbol for each sound. The pronunciation of these symbols will be the same for all speakers of English.
There are many different terms to express where a sound is created, and how it is made. Some sounds are voiced, that is, having air move through the vocal chords, while others do not.
The unit also touched on the intonation of sentences. How a sentence is stressed can dramatically change the meaning. A rise/fall indicates that the speaker is done speaking, while a sentence that rises at the end is asking for a response.
When teaching pronunciation, we should remember that our students may never reach perfection in speaking English like a native speaker.
