For as long as people have been learning and teaching language, there has been continual, and often heated, debate as to which methods and techniques produce the best results. The most common of these, along with a brief description, are listed next. The Grammar – translation method is, in effect, a system of translation. It learns about a
language through finding equivalents in the students’ own language and the foreign language being learned. The Audio – lingualism theory basically suggests that much of learning is a result of habit formation through conditioning. This method uses drills and repetition. The Presentation, Practice and Production method (PPP) has proved to be very effective in teaching at lower levels but it is less effective with more advanced students. Other methods include Communicative Language Teaching, Community Language Learning, The silent way, Suggestopaedia, and The Lexical approach. There is no single best method. All methods has positive and negative features.
