This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit focuses on the receptive skills of reading and listening. It explains how there are four basic skills in any language: receptive skills, reading and listening; and productive skills, speaking and writing. For an 'integrated' lesson a balance of each should be used. Reading is explained to be easier in terms of deduction because the student will have time to re-read and think about the text whereas with learning there is no time to deduce and think. The unit differentiates between authentic and non-authentic texts. Authentic texts are those present in the real English speaking world whereas non-authentic texts are language teaching materials. Authentic texts give students a chance to apply their knowledge in a real setting, giving them confiedence. It is important that beginner students are not taught to understand everysingle world but instead are directed toward a fluent reading or listening. I feel that I have leant effective ways to teach reading and listening skills while also understanding the logic behind the ESA methods.
