Productive skills are speaking and writing. The productive skills are taught to improve accuracy and fluency of language. Speaking commands a certain level of fluency while writing, accuracy.
There are certain activities used to improve students writing and speaking abilities.
Controlled activities which are accuracy based are developed to build students’ confidence and to give them abundant practice. Example is drilling students in the pronunciation of a certain word.
Guided activities, also accuracy based allows students to experiment with the language, while simultaneously ensuring them that they are on the right track, producing understandable, applicable language. Example is a role-play complete with relevant vocabulary and appropriate phrases needed to enact a scene.
Creative communication activities are fluency based and allows students to choose freely from all the English they already know to produce something more likely to mirror a real-life situation. This type of activity could be anything from a debate or a discussion.
