Phonetics, pronunciation, and the linguistic processes of producing sound have always greatly interested me. I actually spent a year and a half taking speech pathology classes (before realizing it was not the path for me) and I must say it was one of the most enlightening and intriguing years of my life. The intricacies of creating each sound that humans create is baffling. The fact we had to reorganize the original biologists of our speech producing organs is truly a testament to human evolution. However, intrigue aside, teaching proper phonetics and pronunciation is beyond difficult. The nuance of intonation, the importance of stress, and the literal physical production of sounds are concepts that native speakers of any language don't consider when speaking, and probably wouldn't know how to properly teach said concepts if prompted. It is something that comes naturally as we learn our native language. That being said I think this unit provided more than a few ideas as to how to relay these concepts to speakers of other languages.
