This unit covered the various teaching materials we could use for the EFL/EYL classroom, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. These include using 'authentic' materials which are based on realistic situations, so students can have realistic examples to practice with, and 'non-authentic' materials which are designed for the classroom either by educational companies or individual teachers. Before designing these materials, teachers need to consider their 'teaching point', how the materials are going to be used in the classroom and how to demonstrate its usage to the students. This unit has also taught me how to use a course book most effectively through omitting, replacing, supplementing and adapting as it is important not to depend on the course book entirely and to pay attention to what needs the students may have. This unit also covered the importance and use of lesson plans and how to plan affectively to achieve lesson aims through the ESA methodology, as well as how to best manage difficult student behaviour in the classroom.
