I have learned that there are a number of methods that can be used to teach learners of English but that the recommended method is ESA, or Engage, Study, Activate. In the \"engage\" stage, the teacher gets the student engaged in the lesson by presenting activities that are more fun, such as games. In the study stage, the teacher teaches new concepts and attention is placed on accuracy. In the activate stage, students focus on using the language fluidly as opposed to necessarily accurately and they may use both the new concepts and previously learned concepts. ESA lessons should always start with the Engage stage and end with the activate stage. Teachers should correct students during the study stages more than during the engage or activate stages. Teachers should allow a student to finish communicating before correcting them. Teachers should mainly correct mistakes when they are directly related to the new content that is being taught, when they are made repeatedly, or when the mistakes make the communication difficult to understand.
