This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit gave a framework for lesson planning, and key points to consider when planning a lesson.
I liked that the unit gave examples, but wasn't overly prescriptive with the method. In discussion with colleagues, some TEFL courses drill the structure that their school uses and has the TEFL students follow that rigidly.
In my opinion, teachers should plan their lessons so that they can ensure some structure, flow and monitor, assess evaluate and review both their teaching and their students learning. Lesson planning is important as a guide for lesson flow and curriculum, and for critically thinking about the structure of lessons. I have found that, especially the learning objectives and language point are essential in ensuring your lessons are targeted, succinct and focused. It also allows you to avoid unnecessary activities or language which may confuse the students or disrupt flow. While useful, they should not be made in such a way that they are inflexible, nor so prescriptive that the lesson plan takes more time than the lesson itself.
