In Unit 15, we discussed way to assess a students language level and the various ways to do so. There are three ways to effectively evauluate students. Teachers can spend time with individual students although it may be time consuming or driscuss in the class as a whole the current curriculum and the positive progress as well as the areas to continue to work on. Teachers can futher assess by asking the students to evaluate the course to determine if a balance of grammar, vocabulary and skill work is being provided and if the course work is pertinent to the language level of the students. There are different tests given throughout the course of the class and they include placement tests and diagnostic test to identify students language levels and what they students do and do not know. Periodic tests are used to evaluate the progress of the students and practices tests are used to determined how close the student is to meeting the required standard for the end of the term external examinations. Such external tests include TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC.
