This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 13 dealt with the nitty gritty of Pronunciation and Phonology and covered every aspect of verbal sounds that I ever imagined, as well as many I knew nothing about: Intonation, Stress, Sound Joining, Phonetics, and Articulation. I had a Love/Hate reaction to this unit. With regard to Intonation, I would inevitably find that my intonation was different from the examples used. (I seemed to rise where they fell.) I did, however, like the section on Stress and it was fun to re-learn some of the rules of where to apply stress in a word. The exercise on reading the same sentence with different words stressed was fun! I also enjoyed the Phonetic Alphabet section and the dialogue between Yogi and Boo-Boo. And I can finally understand the page notes in a dictionary! One improvement that I would STRONGLY suggest is that when the editors decide to reprint this unit - please make the symbols on pages 14 and 22 LARGER. I had to use my computer to enlarge the symbols, then recopy the chart in order to see what each squiggle actually looked like.
