There are many different reasons a person may want to learn English, and there are also many different kinds of English learners. In this unit, we learned about some of them, and the different teaching styles and strategies which can be used to give the best English learning experience to a given student. A teaching method that works for young children will probably not working when teaching business English to adults, for example.
I feel I have learned about some of the more difficult kinds of classes and ESL teacher may encounter, and some strategies for teaching these classes well.I learned the importance of planning lessons prior to teaching the class especially for new teachers. New teachers run into problems around timing of activities. Lesson plans need to be flexible so the teacher can change, extend, omit, or shorten any part of the lesson. Lesson plans also make a record of the class for the teacher. It's important to mark any changes to the plan as the class progresses. I believe lesson planning is an important tool for teachers as they can see what worked, what didn't, what problems came up, etc. And it can also show the teacher where they can improve.
