This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 1 highlights the qualities of a good teacher and a good learner. It then goes into more depth about the different roles of the teacher. A 'good' teacher should be able to switch seemlessly from one role to another: from participant to facilitator, from model to prompter etc. In doing so, the teacher increases the chances of maintaining the learners' attention and motivation and will be more able to ascertain the needs of the group and each individual.
The teacher must be aware of the différences between adult learners and Young learners, and therein the three degrees of YL (13 TO 18, 8 to 12, Under 7s) and design activities to suit, maintaining at all times patience and sensitivity to the individual as well as group needs.
It is interesting to learn that there are officially six Levels and I look forward to dealing with the nuances and subtleties appertaining to each one. In my future practise I would like to know how to assist students through the different grades, that they can have an official account of their progress and success.
