This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
In unit seven we looked at teaching new language. The unit did this by looking at how to teach vocabulary, grammatical structures and language function. The unit emphasized four things a student need to do with a new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it is constructed and be able to practise and produce it.
In terms of vocabulary teaching, the unit looked at how to select appropriate vocabulary. For example, appropriacy to the students is an important factor in choosing vocabulary. It also looked at what students need to know about new vocabulary. For example, the meaning of a word and how it is used will be important. Lastly, it looked at different methods one can use to teach vocabulary through the three ESA stages of teaching.
Teaching new language structures are largely determined by the level of the class and the course syllabus. But, students will always need to know what language means, how it is used, what the grammatical form is and how it is said/written. We also looked at different methods one can use to teach new language structures through the various ESA stages.
Lastly, we looked at teaching new language function and how a typical ESA lesson might look when teaching language function.
