This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit helped to illuminate grammar structure that I use on a daily basis without awareness as well as a good reminder of old grammar lessons.
The basics of the English language were familiar, nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs were all easy enough to remember from elementary and middle school lessons.
As the unit moved into more specific information such as transitive and intransitive verbs, gerunds and the differences between a personal and possessive pronoun however I found myself at the limits of my memory.
Grammar was always a difficult subject for me to properly grasp and I definitely think this will be a unit that I often revisit. As challenging as it can be, I realize what an important role it plays in being able both to understand and teach a language and look forward to having a better understanding.
One of my favorite parts of the unit was the realization that my speech has been following grammatical rules that I was unaware, but that had nonetheless been ingrained. The adjective and adverb order were fascinating to learn about because although I had never thought of it that way, there was definitely a very distinct way they are meant to go in English. It was also a good reminder of the fact that not everyone is aware of this rules that seem so obvious to me, and to always remember the challenge of learning a new language from scratch.
