This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit was beneficial in its breakdown and discussion of the different types of tests and reasons for and ways to test. In Canada we have been going back and forth about types of evaluation and when/at what age students should be tested. I work mostly with teenagers and we have moved to no percentages for grades 8 and 9, but the students and parents want this information. I find too that the level of text anxiety has increased so much that progressive tests are so important, just to help students become comfortable with taking tests on a regular basis. It's almost like using a progressive test as a practice test to practice the level of stress felt during a test. My school does not seem to value placement tests and will place students all over the place, even though they lack the skills to be successful, and turn to copying the work of others in order to complete assignment. I know that I should use diagnostic tests more to determine where my students are at, especially when I pick up a class from another teacher half way through the course (that has happened three times this year - very frustrating for teacher and students). An the different types of external tests were all brand new to me working in the public school system, but still very important and relevant as I look at my senior students who may need to take those tests as they move into their chosen career paths.
