This chapter was nice to read because it really helped me to understand how important the logistics of the classroom can be when considering effective teaching methods. It also touches a little bit on the fact that resources are both important but, not necessary. The chapter gives good examples of ways that equipment like projectors or visual displays can be helpful but, it also provides enough indications of classroom activities and teaching methods that could be used anywhere at any time. I think what I gained most from this chapter was the idea that the teacher needs to personalize the lesson and activities for what suits the teachers personal style the best. That said, it is important that a teacher find a way to adapt their own style to meet the needs and comfort level of the students in the class. Similarly, a good teacher will be able to teach in any environment but, will know how to create an ideal environment when they are presented with the opportunity. I personally wouldn't have minded seeing a few more examples about how to maintain authority in the classroom while working in a multi-cultural context. One thing that has often been difficult for me as an American living in Italy is that the idea of shouting at children in the US is frowned upon whereas raising your voice in an Italian context is a natural consequence of day to day communication norms. I am interested in finding more effective ways to control both the volume of my students and maintaining a calm and consistent approach as a leader.
