While it may seem that pronunciation is a natural part of learning a new language, the specifics and \"science\" of pronunciation are often overlooked. Native English-speaking teachers may taken for granted that there is purposeful emphasis and rhythm to spoken words and sentences. For example, intonation gives meaning to a sentence. Intonation gives evidence of whether the sentence is a question or statement and what particular message the speaker is attempting to convey. Attention can and should be given to how words are stressed for correction pronunciation. The English language contains so many pitfalls for confusion, including how casual/conversational speech often involves sound-changing or sound-dropping, for example. The phonetic alphabet may be intimidating for both teachers and students to decipher, but it is an important tool for learning and knowing the universal sounds produced by consonants and vowels and combinations of these. Our speech organs function in varying ways to produce different sounds. It can be helpful for students to see (using diagrams or pictures) and feel variations in mouth and vocal chord activity. Teachers can choose to have separate, concentrated lessons on pronunciation or to incorporate some training into the day's lesson.
