Teachers must sometimes supplement or substitute the course materials that are provided by their institution. They could use authentic texts suited to those students, or create materials such as crosswords and flashcards, etc. One example would be to cut out 3 photos from magazines: 1 of 2 people together, and 2 objects, asking the students to 1. describe the people's relationship; 2. tell why they like the first object; and 3. why they don't like the second object. Telephone role-play cards can be created with specific instructions for 1 student in a certain situation, and the other student plays the 2nd person that must respond to student No. 1's requests. Published course materials can have pros and cons, but so can materials created by the teacher. Students' individual or cultural needs can be addressed through such personalized materials. Evaluation of published course materials needs to cover a wide range of variables.
