Unit 15 covers the importance and methods of evaluating students on their language level. There are three main ways in which this can be done; tutorials, student self-evaluation, and testing. The main focus of the unit is testing, which can be done in different ways at different times. Placement, diagnostic, practice, and progress tests should be given to students throughout the year (some at different times than others) in order to prepare ESL students for external tests or whatever their end goal may be. Testing is important at the beginning of the year in order to evaluate each students level, this is called placement testing. Progress tests can be given throughout the year to assess which lessons need more work and which lessons have been successful. Diagnostic tests, similar to placement tests just more extensive, are given at the beginning of the year to assess prior knowledge. Finally, teachers can choose to give practice tests if the students plan on completing a final exam. In my opinion, standardized testing is only so effective adn teachers must be aware of the students motivation--good grades or English fluency.
