The receptive skills or reading and listening skills are equally important as the productive or speaking and writing skills. The teacher should incorporate them all to have a balanced impact on students. There are two motives for reading and listening. They are for a purpose (as instructions) and for entertainment (read an interesting story or listen to a joke). Reading and listening are not simply matters for the eyes and ears, but also a matter of using our minds to understand words. We read and listen in 5 different ways: predictive skills, specific information - scanning, general idea - skimming, detailed info, deduction from context. The teacher needs to develop all these skills in the students by using various texts and tasks to engage students.
