Tests are valuable, may it be conducted formally or informally, to determine the skill level of the students, to see a visual record of each students' progress throughout the course, and to determine their skill set (strengths and weaknesses). In other cases, tests are important to prepare English learners for any external tests they aim to take after the completion of the course. Tests are not only important for the teachers but also for the students, both parties will be able to monitor the progress of the student and therefore be able to understand what needs to be done or attended to. As someone who has been a student for many years prior to this event, I understand completely the value of testing, they let me work on myself, for myself, in the areas that might have been missed by the instructor due to a variety or reasons (number of students, time constraints, difficulty of lesson to me as an individual student, etc.).
