This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 5 Managing Classes taught me about classroom management practices/techniques and their advantages and disadvantages. In the first section I learned that good eye contact is essential to establishing a good rapport with the students, and that gesture and voice are also important in managing the class and can help convey the meaning of language, reinforce instructions, increase the pace of the lesson, add visual stimulus and interest, and lessen the need for verbal explanation thus decreasing teacher talk time. One important new thing I learned is that teachers should only use the student's name at the END of the question and not the beginning so as to better maintain the attention of the whole class. I also learned how important grouping of students is and the pros and cons of three types: whole-class grouping, individual work on their own, pair work, and group work. I also learned that varying and mixing up the way I group students and varying my position (seating/standing) has benefits for the classroom environment and can lead to establishing good rapport and ca comfortable atmosphere for learning.
