The first class with a new group is important. The group may be a new one or an existing one where the students have already established a kind of rapport between each other. Either ways, it is important for the teacher to get to know their students in the first class in a way which inspires trust, interest and a desire to keep learning. The students may be of differing levels and of different native languages, finding out about their needs and aspirations will help give the teacher guidelines for what they need to be preparing for subsequent classes.. the students also need to get to know each other and so the first class should include some kind of game or questionnaire where students answer questions about themselves and their interests.
