Testing is a useful tool for both learners and teachers and should be promoted as such. Knowing the student's language level at the very beginning will allow them to be placed into a group that is helpful and comfortable to them. A diagnostic test will refine that and let the teacher know which areas are stronger and weaker for each student. Ongoing progress tests help students realize how far they have come, and what areas still need work. Some students, in addition to just acquiring language skills, are preparing for exams that may be important in their life paths. Testing should encompass all areas of language - speaking, writing, listening and reading.
