Unit eleven focused on teaching receptive skills. The two receptive skills are reading and listening. The reasons why students read and listen can be broadly divided into two categories: for a purpose or for entertainment. When we read or listen we make use of the following skills: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, reading and listening for detailed information and making deductions from the context.
When teaching receptive skills, the teacher should take the following into account:
Is there any vocabulary that needs to be pre-teached
Carefully selecting texts
Making sure he or she chooses a variety of topics
Creating interest in the chosen topic for a lesson
Providing appropriate comprehension tasks
