This unit explained that there are three main areas of the English language that must be covered in an English classroom: vocabulary, grammar and functions. The metaphor of language acquisition to a tree: with grammar representing the trunk and branches of said tree, and vocabulary representing the leaves made me think about my own language learning experiences and if they were truly effective compared this model. In my experiences that were less than successful, vocabulary acquisition was too large of a focus of the course. This metaphor made me realize that grammar and functions should be focused on as much as vocabulary, if not more.
