There are three types of course material -- things produced for native speakers/real-world materials, things produced for students by the teacher, and the course book. Authentic materials can be good for higher level students (especially because it boosts their confidence and is real), but are not good for beginner level students. Materials produced by the teacher can be good when the class is struggling with a concept, but the teacher does not know if it is going to work or not. Course books are good, especially for beginning teachers, but the information is generalized and may be outdated. Teachers are encouraged to not rely solely on course books and to use their own creativity in lessons.
