While learning direct and indirect speech, it is vital for the teacher to use different forms and tenses in relevant activation games for students to listen to the correct structure of direct versus reported speech - especially in the change of pronouns. Teaching ideas for direct/indirect speech can involve a lot of group or pair work which can drive enthusiasm and understanding on a higher level. It is also important for the teacher to properly reflect on the forms of different conditionals with simple rules that can help students tell them apart. For example, trying to see if the sentence's consequence is hypothetical (mixed conditional in the future tense) or a third conditional where the hypothetical consequence is in the past tense. What I learnt in this unit is to teach slowly as many students will face confusion in usage with the various formats and changes of time expression in reported speech.
