Unit 18 was a discussion of modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. I found this final discussion of grammar to be useful and enlightening. The first part of the unit, covering auxiliary modal verbs, was particularly interesting. Modals are used to add meaning to verbs and can communicate a number of different ideas with varying levels of formality. For example, \"can\" and \"may\" are both used to request permission but they carry different levels of formality so they are used in different contexts. Phrasal verbs were a new concept in that I didn't realize phrases operated as one item within a sentence. The unit provides some useful teaching ideas for each of the concepts discussed.
