This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Students must have a reason to communicate with each other. Without a reason, they are not motivated to learn or engage in the lesson. There are two effective activities used when teaching writing skills: accuracy and fluency. Both activities are equally important when teaching. Accuracy checks understanding before the using a fluency activity. For example, accuracy based activities such as, drilling, role-playing, model dialogues, debates and communication games are just some of the activities useful for beginning an ESL lesson.
A teacher can encourage their students to speak by encouraging them, not focusing on mistakes, creating interest and being culturally sensitive to specific topics. At the end of the lesson, the teacher should always provide feedback to the students. Focus on the positive and what the students were able to do. The teacher can also record the activity and replay it back to the students.
