This unit explains how intonation and stress are used in English to express meaning and elicit responses, and emphasise certain parts of a sentence respectively, and introduces the International Phonetic Alphabet used for teaching pronunciation. The unit also gives examples on how the different aspects of pronunciation can be taught to English language students, such as through mouth diagrams. I found the IPA to be particularly useful for providing an objective basis on which to teach pronunciation, as spelling often does not match pronunciation which can present difficulties to students. I also found the rules on word stress important as I am not aware of such rules but simply memorise the stresses on different words.
