Conditional sentences contain ?if? or ?when,? which refer to past, present and future possibilities. The sentence contains an ?if? clause and a main clause. There are five main types of conditional sentences.
? Zero conditional sentences refer to actions and facts that are irrefutable. E.g. When you boil water, you get steam.
? First conditional sentences talk about future situations that are possible, probable or certain, once the condition is satisfied. E.g. If he studies hard, he will pass the exam.
? Second conditional sentences talk about a hypothetical situation that is presently not true and is unlikely to ever be true. E.g. If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.
? Third conditional sentences refer to hypothetical past actions and the hypothetical consequence. If I had practiced the piano, I would have been better.
? Mixed conditional sentences combine a second conditional clause with a third conditional clause.
