This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The English language is one of the most popular spoken language in the world. However, in as much as it has gained popular for yesteryears, it has also brought some divisions amongst her speakers with every speaker claiming superiority and refinement over the other. - take the case of the British and American English. Nevertheless, there is no one standard English as each speaker basically reflects where they come from. This unit thus tackles the role of pronunciation and phonology in ESL teaching. While the pronunciation of words has not made things easier, we as ESL teachers must decide in advance which sub dialects of the English language we will be using through out the teaching learning process. This unit solves the puzzle behind pronunciation as it explains how a word may have different meaning depending on the mood of the speaker. It also handles the phonology of the English where it talks about its origin, stress, intonation, articulation, just to mention a few. It equally illustrates the phonemic representation of the English language on a chart with emphasis on which parts of the month formation should be used for utterances. As ESL teachers, learning about all these will go a long way to improve our ability to pronounce words correctly as well as teach our students a standard of English universally recognized. The unit does ends with supportive and helpful tips on how to teach pronunciation and make our lessons more interesting.
