Unit 5 deals with class management concerns such as seating arrangements and student groupings, the teacher's varying role in the classroom, as well as general issues of discipline. The overview of possible arrangements of students in a classroom is primarily concerned with advising a teacher of potential advantages and disadvantages of each. There is not one that is better than the others, rather the positioning and grouping of students, as well as the position and behavior of the teacher, are best adapted to the immediate situation. Group work and seating allows for a high amount of low-stress student interaction and talk-time, whereas it is not ideal for moments when the teacher needs the attention of the entire class to relay instructions. The overarching theme of this unit seems to be awareness and common sense. There are some basic strategies provided, but almost entirely with the caveat that all guidance is subject to a greater rule--the unique situation and individuals at hand.
