Unit 13 is based on coursebooks vs. other lesson materials. Relying all the time on a book can become predictable and boring, that is why we have learned that we should feel free to omit, replace, supplement and adapt. Even the best book should not be seen as written law. Lately I used a coursebook and this book introduced nationalities. However, I wanted to go into more details and provide more example so I provided additional material.
When creating additional material, one can focus on one students (e.g. cultural background, level, focal point, etc.). Sometimes, I like to use authentic materials. They are great when appropriate since they offer realistic insight into the language.
