Unit 11, teaching receptive skills has been an excellent unit to study. Yes, it may be a lot shorter than the rest, but it does take into consideration things that i would have never thought to imagine would be apart of receptive skills. For example, how different people from different cultures can interpret the same sentence completely differently. Using the example in the unit itself, how an American could see a headline of, 'Bears destroyed by Cowboys' and they'll just firstly understand that it's about American football, where as someone else from another culture could interpret this into actually animals being harmed. This is a great lesson to understand and to make sure you always input this into all of the classes. Because one student that you may be teaching English, may interpret a sentence to a different study, who are both from completely different backgrounds. Learning about how people learn and understand context in different areas, such as; predictive skills, scanning, skimming, deduction from content and detailed is fascinating. I believe that this will help you out when helping students. When you can notice the difference between these different styles, you'll be able to know how a student works and the best way from them to continue learning at the highest level. You can do this by developing the skills of a students more in different areas of reading.
