This unit was about the very important need for structure in ESl lessons. here it is referred to as ESA (standing for Engage, Study, Activate).
Following this structure, or a variation thereof, should ensure that learners in the ESL classroom understand and internalise new content effectively. In the Engage stage the teacher should use activities or games to engage the interest of the students, making them feel comfortable and at ease in the classroom environment whilst giving them an oppurtunity to speak freely and use previously learned content in oral speech.
The study stage is where the main content of a new lesson is introduced, using different teaching techniques and styles as learned in units 1 and 2.
Finally the activate stage is where the teacher encourages students to use absolutely any English language content they know to communicate, but of course trying to guide students towards using new content wherever possible.
