In this chapter I learn the intonation, the stress and the pronunciation.
Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence. There are three pattern of intonation: rise-fall, fall-rise and flat. We can use different techniques for teaching intonation like by gesture, sweeping our hand up or down, or by humming or by making marks on some sentences on the board.
The stress is where the intonation begins to fall and depending on which word is emphasize we can have different interpretation of the sentence. Usually the words carring the essential information in a sentence are stressed and they can have just one stress on a syllable.
We can underline or mark on the board the word stress or use gesture or say a word correctly and then repeat it with the stress on a different syllable.
The phonetic alphabet shows how a word should be pronounced. There are different symbols that indicate different sound. Depending on which speech organ we use to produce a sound, this could be : velar, palatal, palatal alveolar, alveolar, dental, labio dental, bilabial, or glottal.
Also the way how the air comes out of our mouth, give a name of a sound. They can be: plosive, fricative, affricative, nasal, lateral or approximant.
We can help our students to understand how a sound is making by drowing a diagram of the mouth or showing over emphasising exactly what our mouth is doing. We can teach the right pronunciation of a sound even with dictation or using the phonetic symbols.
