A Modal verb is a word used before the root verb to assist it and add meaning. Some such are:can, might, would, have to. Modal verbs help add a polite tone, can add formality, show necessity etc. In English, there are 2 voices: the Active Voice and the Passive Voice. In both, the tense of the sentence remains the same. In the Active Voice, the subject does the verb. In the Passive Voice, the noun phrase that would be the object of an active sentence appears as the subject of a sentence or clause. A clause is a phrase containing a subject and a verb. The 3 types are: Independent, Dependent and Relative.
