Materials can be broken down into authentic and created groups. Authentic materials have their advantages in that they inspire confidence in the learner when they understand the language. It is important to keep in mind that authentic materials may not be suitable for the class that you are teaching, and your materials should be chosen as such.
Created materials can often be better resources for beginner English students. They are advantageous because they offer materials that are graded on difficulty, that have a specific purpose and may come with supporting materials for the teacher. Created material from course books can be used, but it should be carefully chosen to make sure it has a positive influence on the students. Books are often generalized and don't offer help to specific demographics.
