Unit 14 explained the various ways course books and lesson materials can be used in the classroom. It explained the difference between authentic materials and created materials and gave the potential positives and negatives of using both. This unit did a good job at pointing out the value of having a professional lesson that would encourage students to grow and allow them to see that growth, while at the same time using materials that are interesting and relevant to the students. I appreciated how the unit pointed out several resources for finding course material and provided examples of how things like crosswords, word searches, pictures, and role play can be used as well. Overall my biggest take away from this unit was finding the balance between a straightforward textbook lesson and a creative and interesting lesson to keep the students invested in the material while at the same time developing the language skills necessary for success.
