ESL teachers are responsible for teaching and/or exposing their students to all four elements of language; speaking, writing, reading and listening. Of the four, many students find listening to English the hardest (especially when spoken by a non-ESL teacher). The key focus is to encourage students to identify the context of receptive messages, despite not knowing every word within the sentence. Additionally, only words with meanings that are absolutely necessary to understand the message at hand should be explained. That offers students a chance to familiarize themselves with how best to communicate in English as a non-native tongue.
