Unit 13 talked about how to teach pronunciation and phonology. The unit described in detail two components of pronunciation and phonology; intonation and stress. Intonation is the variation in pitch and volume throughout a sentence. There are four techniques to use to teach intonation, including using gestures and humming or singing. Next, stress pertains to the word in a sentence that is most emphasized. Typically verbs are stressed, but depending on what meaning the sentence is trying to portray, stress could be placed on another word. Lastly, this unit reviewed the International Phonetic Alphabet and also went into detail on articulation; the speech organs, the place of articulation and manner of articulation. Techniques for teaching phonetic sounds include peer dictation, tongue twisters and visuals.
